"Yesterday this curly-dragon visitor centre under construction on an innovation park in Beijing was granted a “green” gold medal by the UK Building Research Establishment (BRE). The BREEAM Outstanding award goes to a 44,000 square foot block which can run on secondhand cooking oil — if it ever needs heating. The designer is Ian Bogle of UK-based Bogle Architects.
He won the project after a visit by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang to BRE in 2011. The premier toured an experimental house and fancied transferring British expertise to China. A deal was struck with Chinese house builder Vanke, a company so vast it could swallow both Barratt and Taylor Wimpey and not burp. The 110-acre “Green Building Park” in the Fangshan district has reserved space for 10 experimental homes from the UK. The first is being built by Scottish developer AppleGreen Homes. Might Barratt or Taylor Wimpey be interested? No?"
